What to Expect for Massage

BEFORE

To avoid taking precious time from your appointment, plan to arrive a few minutes early for paperwork and questions. Questions may include what medications you are taking, health concerns (injuries / illnesses), allergies to or intolerances of oils and fragrances. Also discussed will be your expectations of the massage such as relaxation, increased energy, to alleviate soreness, etc. You will be shown to the room where your massage will take place. After the therapist leaves the room, you will undress to your level of comfort and lie on the massage table under the sheet and blanket or towel.

DURING

The room will have dim lighting and music. Only the area of the body being worked on will be exposed. Muscle groups are systemically massaged completing the body from head to toe or as discussed. A light oil or lotion may be used to permit your muscles to be worked on without causing excessive friction to the skin. The lubricants used should hydrate the skin and be readily absorbed. You should let your therapist know immediately if anything makes you uncomfortable, including the pressure, music, lighting, or room temperature. Make yourself comfortable. The therapist will gently move you throughout the session. Many people just close their eyes and completely relax. Others like to talk during their session.

The average full-body massage lasts approximately one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, for instance the neck and shoulder, back, or legs and feet. Many people prefer a sixty to ninety minute session for optimal relaxation. Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session.

AFTER

Most people are very relaxed after massage. You are encouraged to drink plenty of water before and after massage. Toxins may be released from your soft tissues during the massage and adequate amounts of water will help facilitate their removal from the body.

Massage is discouraged when fever or illness are present. If you have any questions or doubts, please discuss them with your therapist or medical doctor before your appointment.
